Cycle to Work Scheme: Save up to 52% on a New Bike

What is the Cycle to Work Scheme?

Did you know you can save between 31% and 52% on the cost of a new bicycle and safety accessories? The Cycle to Work Scheme is a government tax incentive designed to encourage more people to cycle to and from work. It allows your employer to purchase a bike on your behalf, which you then pay back through a salary sacrifice arrangement.

Because the repayments come out of your salary before tax, USC, and PRSI are deducted, you save a significant amount on the final cost.

What are the Limits?

As of the latest government updates, the scheme covers the following maximum amounts:

  • €1,250 for standard bicycles and accessories.
  • €1,500 for electric bikes (e-bikes) and accessories.
  • €3,000 for cargo bikes and e-cargo bikes.

Note: You can purchase a bike that costs more than these limits, but you will only receive tax relief on the capped amount. You must pay the balance directly to us.

What Can I Buy?

The scheme applies to new bicycles and pedelecs (e-bikes), but it also covers essential safety equipment. You can bundle these into your quote:

  • Helmets, lights, and bells.
  • Locks and chains.
  • Mirrors, mudguards, and cycle clips.
  • Panniers, luggage carriers, and straps.
  • Cycle clothing (e.g., high-vis vests, rain gear).

Why Employers Love the Scheme

It is not just the employee who benefits. The Cycle to Work Scheme is highly attractive for businesses of all sizes in Ireland.

  • Employer PRSI Savings: This is the biggest financial incentive. Your company does not pay Employer PRSI (currently 10.75%) on the salary sacrificed. This means if an employee buys a bike for €1,000, the company actually saves €107.50 in tax liability.
  • Healthier Workforce: Staff who cycle to work are generally fitter, healthier, and take fewer sick days than non-cyclists.
  • Reduced Overheads: Encouraging cycling reduces the demand for expensive car parking spaces at your office.
  • Zero Cost: The scheme costs the business nothing to implement. The cost of the bike is fully recovered from the employee's gross salary over a period of up to 12 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible?

The scheme is open to anyone paying PAYE, PRSI, and USC. Self-employed people are generally not eligible unless they pay PAYE.

How often can I use the scheme?

You can avail of the Cycle to Work Scheme once every 4 years. This applies even if you bought a bike under the old lower limits.

Can I buy a sale bike?

Yes! You can use the scheme on sale items, maximizing your savings even further.

My employer isn't currently taking part in the scheme, what can I do?

The scheme is voluntary, so your employer is not legally obliged to offer it. However, in our experience, many employers (especially smaller businesses) simply don't know how easy it is to set up or that they save money too.

We recommend you print out a quote from us and show them the "Employer Benefits" section above. Once they realize that they save 10.75% on Employer PRSI and that the paperwork is minimal, most are very happy to sign up.
